白丁 I

白丁 is my 'long lost' but 'never met' class mate's pen name. My friend HKer from FM gave me the entire poem as follows. FM, blogs.foolsmountain.com is a blog on China - do you remember the story on a fool trying to move a mountain?

I hated to recite the poems we were forced to in HK school. Probably too much storage requirement in my limited brain cells. However, the enjoyment in later life outweighs all the suffering then.

山不在高，有仙則名。
水不在深，有龍則靈。
斯是陋室，唯吾德馨。
苔痕上階綠，草色入帘青。
談笑有鴻儒，往來無白丁。
可以調素琴，閱金經。
無絲竹之亂耳，無案牘之勞形。
南陽諸葛廬，西蜀子云亭。
孔子云：「何陋之有？」

苔痕上階綠 ，草色入簾青。談笑有鴻儒，往來無白丁？

第一句話明明說很久沒有人來，所以階梯上都長滿了青苔，窗簾看出去長滿了青草。可見住的位置很荒涼。可是看到大部分的翻譯都說充滿生機和一片綠意，環境清幽。而第二句又更誇張了，說往來的都是大儒，往來沒有白丁！我覺得這句話的意思是：

那些被認為是大儒者是可笑的，來往的老百姓反而是值得學習的對象，如果眼中只有看到對方的缺點，任何人都是「白丁」。否則「陋室」中人就是與世俗人一般，是以外表看人的人了。
